FAQ

Common Questions

How do I know if my tractor is positive or negative ground?

Look at the battery cable that connects to the chassis or engine block. If the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal grounds to the frame, you have a negative-ground system — this gauge fits. If the positive (+) terminal cable grounds to the frame, you have a positive-ground system — order SKU 1816 instead. Most John Deere tractors built after the early 1960s are negative ground, but the 3020 (>SN 122999), 4020 (>SN 200999), and 5020 (>SN 24999) crossed into newer wiring at the serial numbers shown above. Check yours.

How do I test my old gauge before replacing?

Disconnect the sender wire and ground it to the chassis with the key on — the needle should swing to Full. If it doesn't move, the gauge is dead. If it pegs full and stays there, the gauge is fine and your sender is bad. If it moves erratically, you may have a wiring or ground issue rather than a bad gauge.

Does this come with a new sending unit?

No — gauge only. The fuel sender (in the tank) is a separate part. If your gauge reading is wildly off but the gauge itself works on a bench test, the sender float is likely stuck or the rheostat is worn. Test sender continuity from empty to full with an ohmmeter (should sweep 0-30 Ω). If it doesn't, order a new sender too.
